4 Steps to Your Full Licence
Whether you're a complete beginner or returning rider, B-Bikers Bristol will guide you through every stage of getting your full motorcycle licence.
Choose Your Licence Category
Different licence categories unlock different bikes. Here's a quick overview:
CBT — Compulsory Basic Training
Your first step on the road. The CBT is a one-day course that gives you the skills and knowledge to ride a motorcycle or moped safely on public roads with L-plates. It's not a test — it's a training course, and once completed you'll receive a certificate (DL196) valid for 2 years.
- Minimum age: 16 for mopeds (50cc), 17 for motorcycles up to 125cc
- No prior experience needed
- Covers eyesight check, basic motorcycle controls, on-site riding, and on-road riding
- Certificate valid for 2 years — renewable if needed
- Allows you to ride on public roads with L-plates (no motorways)
Theory Test
Before you can take your practical motorcycle tests, you must pass the DVSA motorcycle theory test. It consists of two parts: a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception test. Both must be passed in the same sitting.
- 50 multiple-choice questions — need 43 correct to pass
- Hazard perception: 14 video clips, need 44 out of 75 to pass
- Book through the official DVSA website
- Theory test pass certificate valid for 2 years
- Study using the official Highway Code and DVSA resources
Module 1 — Off-Road Test
Module 1 is an off-road manoeuvres test conducted at a DVSA test centre. You'll demonstrate controlled riding skills including slow-speed balance, figure-of-eight, slalom, U-turn, and emergency stop. It takes around 20 minutes.
- Conducted at a DVSA approved test centre
- Tests slow-speed control, cornering, and emergency procedures
- Includes a timed emergency stop at 50km/h
- Maximum of 5 minor faults allowed — no serious or dangerous faults
- Pass certificate valid for 2 years
Module 2 — On-Road Test
The final step. Module 2 is a 40-minute on-road riding test where an examiner follows you on a separate motorcycle and communicates via radio earpiece. You'll be assessed on your ability to ride safely and confidently in real traffic conditions.
- Approximately 40 minutes of on-road riding
- Examiner follows on a separate motorcycle
- Covers a variety of road types and traffic situations
- Includes an independent riding section (following signs or sat-nav)
- Maximum of 10 minor faults — no serious or dangerous faults
